Dear Evan Hansen. Mar. 12 & Jun. 11, 2022 at the Music Box Theatre

  • Anybody have a map? --

  • Waving through the window -- 是Evan Hansen的邊緣人獨白。

That you were not the monster that I knew.”

  • Disappear -- No one deserves to be forgotten.

  • You will be found -- 應該可以說是這部劇的主題曲。

You will be found

[Evan]

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?

Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?

Have you ever felt like you could disappear?

Like you could fall, and no one would hear?

Well, let that lonely feeling wash away

Maybe there's a reason to believe you'll be okay

'Cause when you don't feel strong enough to stand

You can reach, reach out your hand

And oh, someone will come running

And I know, they'll take you home

Even when the dark comes crashing through 即使當黑暗席捲而來

When you need a friend to carry you 當你需要一個朋友扛著你

And when you're broken on the ground

*** Spoiler Alert ***

2017 Tony Award for Best Musical! There was a period on Broadway when multiple musicals were about high school life. One might be wondering how tough American high school life is to give so much inspiration to the artists... Hopefully the kids would be inspired by these musicals, realize everyone has challenges, and be nicer to each other.

The title of Dear Evan Hansen cleverly hints at the genesis of the story: a letter. A letter that the protagonist Evan Hansen wrote to himself simply as an assignment from his therapist. After a series of mishaps, the letter was mistakenly thought to be written by Connor Murphy, a student who tragically killed himself, to his best friend Evan Hansen. Lies started to snowball from there since. Not only did Evan go from an outcast in school to an internet sensation, but he also got closer to the Murphy family. So close that Connor's parents even offered to pay for Evan's college tuition. As more and more lies began to contradict themselves, the moment of truth finally arrived. Despite the merciless truth, the by-product of the gigantic lie, The Connor Project -- a club that was founded in memory of Connor to remind people that no one was alone -- actually provided an opportunity for people to be together. At the end of the show, Connor's sister Zoe, who briefly dated Evan and was probably hurt the most by the lie, even acknowledged that her family needed the lie to help them endure that difficult time. Perhaps, lies can be beautiful.

The music of this show was written by the famous American songwriting duo Pasek & Paul. They are so good that they have won the four big awards for entertainment/performing arts (Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, Tony Awards) and are 2 of the only 28 EGOT winners in history (Audrey Hepburn is also an EGOT winner!). They wrote City of Stars in La La Land, and the music in the popular musical movie The Greatest Showman. Their immense musical talent was well demonstrated in Dear Evan Hansen. Aside from the wide array of musical style, the conversations or soliloquies in the songs were brilliant and witty. In addition to showing different viewpoints of different characters on the same subjects, some lyrics made me further appreciate the beauty of English.

  • Anybody have a map? -- The first song of the show. Two moms struggling with parenting their high school sons. They struggle with wanting their kids to be more confident and fit in more. The show is more than the struggles of high school kids. It is also in some ways about parenting.

  • Waving through the window -- Evan's soliloquy as an outcast in school. Wondering if he is invisible and no one can see him.

  • Requiem -- The Murphy family (dad, mom, sister Zoe) share why they wouldn't sing a requiem for Connor. Zoe's part with the melody is such a sharp accusation: "Don't say it wasn't true. That you were not the monster that I knew.” Every family has a skeleton in the closet.

  • Disappear -- No one deserves to be forgotten.

  • You will be found -- This is probably the theme song of this show. It is so inspiring that many bands and a capella groups did a cover of this song, even the US Army and Navy. May we all remember that one of the bravest things to do, is to reach out and ask for help.

  • So big, so small -- After the bubbles of lie burst, Evan's mom finally found the gigantic mess that Evan had caused. She got home, sat on the couch, and sang to Evan. It started with the day that Evan's dad left them, the day she promised that she would stay. The contrasts in the lyrics are so beautiful: from the spatially big house to the mom who was in a million pieces; then the temporal difference between now and the future. Evan's mom understands that Evan must be feeling the massive weight of the world on him at the moment, but she promises him that everything will pass and become small, and she will still be there with him. Maybe this show is a reminder that simply being present with your kids is the best way to show your unconditional love.

Dear Evan Hansen was so popular that a novel and a movie adaptation were happening not long after the show went on Broadway. Unlike many other musicals that were adapted from movies, it took sort of a reverse route. Even though the novel had more detailed plots, without the music, some heartfelt elements from the musical were missing. For the movie, although the original Tony-winning Ben Platt resumed the role of Evan, and there were superstars Julianne Moore and Amy Adams, the movie was just horrifying. The director somehow ended up cutting some of the great and important songs, especially the duets between the two moms. The tension in the story disappeared with the songs. If you ever get a chance to see a local production or a touring company, go and see it. Don't let the movie give you the wrong impression about the show and miss the chance to be reminded that you are not alone.
